Radiating
safety
The sources of ionizing radiation in Azerbaijan belong to various
scientific-research organizations (mainly to Sector of radiation
researches of Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan), medical objects
and military divisions. In the Sector of radiation isotope sources
Co-60, Cs-137 with activity about mkCuri are available for researches
since 60's. Electron Accelerators ELU-4, ELIT-1, E-12 with electron
energy up to 5KW and power of beam up to 1 KW also available. In
various medical organizations (Institute of oncology, hospitals)
are available isotope sources and X-ray equipment for radiotherapy
and radiodiagnostics. After certain time of use the activity of
isotope sources are reduced and cannot be used on target purpose.
In these cases arises problems storage of radioactive wastes. The
maintenance of radiating safety is connected with using and storage
of these sources, and also with the problem of natural radioactivity
of the country.
Practically all sources of artificial radioactivity (isotope sources,
x-ray apparatus, the accelerators electrons) supplied with reliable
protective and automatically blocking system and supervised by sanitary
bodies. Negative influence on the radioecological conditions can
finishing of potential opportunities special combinat "Isotope".
Yet in 1994 assignments are allocated and work on reconstruction
and expansion of "Isotope" are begun. A total cost of
work makes 4 mln US dollars.
Since 1997 carrying out inventory of sources of ionizing radiation
in the country. Sources of ionizing radiation was found out in Soyug-Bulag
Akstafa region and Nakhchivan on the territories of military object,
left by Russian militarists
One of major factors, complicating a radioecological conditions,
is production, transportation and processing of petroleum. Petroleum
extract on the surface of water contain radium, thorium, isotope
of calcium which penetrate into ground, accumulate on walls of pipes,
concentrate on local sites. In these sites a level of radioactive
field exceeds permissible background level in 50-150 times.
For
example measurements of Zolotovitskoy and Aliyev shows, that in
separate sites of petroleum deposits Gum adasi the level of a radiating
background reaches 600 mcR/h. Measurement of the radiating level
in objects of oil pipelines (pump stations, reservoir parks, pipelines
and etc) show, that the significant increase of a radiating background
in an environment is not observed. It does not exclude an opportunity
presence of the raised radiating level in objects themselves.
An abnormal high concentration of radionucleids fixed also in industrial
wastes of chemical and iodium - bromide manufactures. In Baku on
1998 31 sites, mainly in central part of city, is established 157
sites local and area pollution by radionucleids with the level of
radiation up to120-3000 mcR/hour.
On the territory of Azerbaijan exists very favorable conditions
from a point - of view of a level of natural radioactivity. So,
level of natural radioactivity within the limits of permissible
norm and does not exceed 10-15mkr/hour.
